Good luck on your project:

1) DJason is absolutely correct, especially as you have bandwidth considerations. Filezilla is great and free. For what you are intending, the learning curve is minutes. More importantly, FTP is older than the Internet and will not let you down. Downloaders attached to browsers are great for other things.

2) Moongleam is absolutely correct. But this stuff gets crazy fast. I'd recommend Avidemux for XP. It will do what Moongleam recommends and there is good forum support.

3) As a generalization only, if you can go from DVD (or mpeg2) to avi with 1500 Kbps video and 96Kbps audio in 640 or 720, this will well cover nearly everything PD. x264 is better for several reasons, but avi is still good coin of the realm, after all these years. Two passes still means a lot. Avidemux will do that and a lot more.

If bandwidth is really a major concern, start with small test files--you'll find out quicker what went right or wrong and then be on your way. Good luck!

A thousand thanks, guys! I'll do some experimenting early next week, and get back to you with what probably will be a dump-load of questions.

Again, Merry Christmas!
And Festivus for the rest of us!
